In the US, Verizon is a market leader, owning a recently reported 27% of the market. Verizon also hopes to continue its leadership position in the wireless entertainment space.

For instance, Verizon ringtones are available to subscribers through Verizon’s website or through any other ringtone merchant on the web.

Verizon’s first push in the mobile content space was offering Verizon Wireless ringtones after forging relationships with Rhino Records and Sony Music Entertainment.

Via its deal with Sony, Verizon gained access to Sony’s massive music catalog which includes performers like Kenny G, Good Charlotte, Lauryn Hill, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Sara Bareilles and T.I. among hundreds of others.

Verizon also gained great notoriety from its relationship with the American Idol franchise. The Verizon American Idol deal has had amazing results. In fact, in May 2008, Verizon Wireless announced that it has delivered nearly 58 Billion text messages in the first three months of 2008, aided by American Idol voting.
